I had a visit to Royal Group of Institutions for the first time in 2010. I was overwhelmed by the top class Architecture of the Institution which was taking shape at that time. Recently I visited RGI in 2016 with my cousin who completed his 12th and was checking out which Institute would be good for him to trust his career with. This time I found that the Institute architecture is fully developed and I think this is the only Institution apart from IIT Guwahati in Guwahati to have such terrific facilities for students.
In 2010, I actually went to RGI for a demo lecture and the most funny incident of my life happened which I realized later.
At that time I was working in a MNC in Chennai. But in my core, I actually wanted to be a Lecturer at that time. I was also preparing for GATE in parallel.
Although, I have done my graduation in Electronics and Communication, I was more inclined towards Computer Science. Therefore, I was self teaching myself all the subjects of Computer Science.
Meanwhile, date of my marriage was also fixed and I was planning to come home. This was May 2010. Since I was not that much interested in the job that I was doing at that time, I planned to apply in one of the Institutes in Assam for the job of Lecturer.
I thought that as I was preparing for GATE, a job of Lecturer will be complementary. I searched for good Institutes in Assam and RGI immediately caught my attention. I searched more about the Institute and finally decided to apply for the post of Lecturer in this Institute.
As planned, I mailed all my details to the respected Principal Dr. Biswajit Banerjee and waited for a call. I got the call from him for a demo lecture when I was boarding my flight from Kolkata to Guwahati.
On the day of the demo Lecture, I over slept and woke up at around 8:45 am in the morning. It takes around 2 hours from my native Sarthebari to the Institution by car. The demo Lecture was scheduled at 11 am.
I saw the time and panicked. I quickly took my bath, dressed up myself, took the car from Garage and drove straight away for RGI.
I reached RGI exactly at 11 am and went to Principal's office. Dr. Banerjee greeted me very cheerfully and led me to the Seminar Hall where the lecture was scheduled.
Dr. Banerjee has a charismatic personality and I was thinking that he must have been very popular among the students.
Many lecturers and Institute's director was also sitting in the hall. I was asked whether I brought any slides which I did not. Therefore, I headed towards the white board with a marker in my hand.
All the while, it was only me who was thinking that I was giving this demo lecture for the post of Lecturer in Computer Science. But rest of the people are thinking I am applying for the post in Electronics and Communication department since I have done my B.E in Electronics and Communication.
The funny thing or the Communication Gap or Co-incidence whatever you may wish to say - I picked up a Topic from Computer Networks for my lecture and Computer Networks belong to both Computer Science and Electronics and Communication.
I was very confident and the demo lecture went very well. I was also able to clearly answer the questions imposed on me by the lecturers sitting in the hall.
Then I was asked, whether I will be able to teach Power Electronics. I was wondering, why they are asking me if I can teach Power Electronics as it does not belong to Computer Science !!!
I said no. I cannot teach Power Electronics and I did not even ask them why they are asking me this as Power Electronics does not belong to Computer Science (Co-incidence you may say!!)
Then I was asked what are the latest Electronics Technology in the research domain. I said, I don't know and was getting more confused.
Then the demo lecture was over and I had tea with rest of the staff and Dr. Banerjee told me that I will be informed about the result. I then just checked out the beautiful campus and left for the day.
Till this day no one from the Institute knows that I actually applied for the post of Lecturer in Computer Science Department.
Funny things happen in Life !!!!
